Your body's fuel comes
mainly from carbohydrates and fat. Carbohydrates are, nevertheless,
the most important form of fuel during intensive exercise. An
empty carbohydrate stock results in a decreasing exercise performance
to the tune of 50% and can even lead to disturbed functioning
of the brain (concentration loss).
Fluid. Our body consists mainly out of water. Water is a means
of transport and necessary for heat release and the circulation
of blood. A loss of 2% of your body weight through fluid loss
results in a decreasing exercise performance of 20 to 40%. When
becoming thirsty you have already lost 2% of your body weight
through fluid loss. Therefore drink before you feel thirsty!
Necessary needs. Your body therefore needs sufficient amounts
of fluid and carbohydrates which are ingested as fast as possible
to perform optimally. Nevertheless, there are some facts that
should be takeninto account.
Before and after the exercise you should take into account the
maximum carbohydrate stock capacity of you body. You can maximally
stock between 0.8 - 1.2g of carbohydrates per kg bodyweight per
hour. For example: a man with a body weight of 70kg can, on average,
maximally stock 70g of carbohydrates per hour.
During the exercise you should take into account the ideal ingestion
speed of carbohydrates by the body. During exercise the fastest
ingestion of carbohydrates occurs by consuming a liquid with a
carbohydrate percentage of 6 to 8%.
