What is the best walking sock for me?

With such a large range of it can be a little confusing. However, to make it easy we categorise them into activity (footwear) type. Use the filters on this page to make choosing the best walking socks for you.

Trail running socks

Trail running is any off road running such as footpaths, tracks and mountain areas. These shoes are similar to running shoes but with a sole more suited to varying surfaces.

  • Trail 21 Single Layer Sock Twin Pack
  • Trek Repreve Single Layer Twin Pack
  • Trek Single Layer Sock

Walking in Approach shoes

Approach shoes are a cross between a hiking shoe and a climbing shoe. They are called Approach shoe because climbers wear them to approach a rock climb. However, most of use wear them as a shoe alternative to a walking boot.

  • Approach Double Layer Sock
  • Approach Repreve Double Layer Sock

Ankle walking socks

Ankle walking socks are cut lower and ideal if you are wearing lightweight shoes in warm conditions.

  • All Terrain Double Layer Sock
  • Walking Sock Twin Pack

Socks for walking boots

These are boots used for hiking and hill walking, or even taking the dog for a walk off road. Socks for midweight walking boots are more suitable for longer distances and mountain walking.

  • Fusion Double Layer Walking Sock
  • Lightweight Double Layer Walking Sock
  • Combat Sock Twin Pack
  • Lightweight Walking Repreve

Trek & Mountaineering

These socks are designed for the toughest of challenges in more demanding environments. Mountaineering boots tend to be heavier with much stiffer soles to protect your feet over rough terrain.

Decide on length, single or double layer and whether you want thick padded walking socks.

Sock length

Choose between Crew length or Calf length walking socks. If you are walking in boots then we recommend Calf length. If you are walking in shoes then Crew length is fine.

Single or double layer socks?

The 1000mile double layer walking sock is designed to help prevent blisters. The two sock layers rub against each other instead of the skin. However, two layers retain more heat than one so some walkers prefer a single layer sock.

If you are doing an activity which is outside your normal routine, for example a walking holiday, then you may want to go a for a double layer sock.

Another important point to consider is the type of sock you were wearing when you purchased your shoes/boots. For example, if you had a thick sock on when trying on footwear, then you should stick with a thicker sock. This is because your foot moves around more, potentially causing blisters.

Padding

Padding adds extra protection for your foot. The Fusion, Trek and Repreve Walk range of socks have extra padding in the toes, heel and ball of the foot.

Thick walking socks

Thick walking socks have a double layer and paddin. As a result, they are better for very cold conditions where you need the extra thermal properties. However, make sure that when you buy new boots or shoes then you take the socks you will be wearing to try them on.

What size do I need?

Choose the same size walking socks as your foot size. For example, if you have a narrow fitting (D or less for men, B or less for women) or are on the border between sizes you should go down a size. The sock should be a snug fit with not wrinkles.

Men's shoe size:

  • Medium – 6-8.5UK (EUR 39-42.5)
  • Large – 9-11.1UK (EUR 43-46.5)
  • XL – 12-14UK (EUR 47-49)

Ladies shoe size:
